About the Motorcycle Club The Network of South Asian Professionals of DC (NetSAP-DC) Motorcycle club will be launching as a new Special Interest Committee for 2004. The idea is to promote safe, fun and engaged motorcycling among members. We are open to all classes and sizes of bikes, though we are mostly all sportbikes. As long as you can sustain highway speeds (ie 65+ mph), you are welcome to join us. Once the weather starts to cooperate, we plan on going on day rides looking for fun roads and beautiful scenery. In the summer, weekend overnight trips may be planned. The emphasis is on safety first. To that end the Motorcycle club seeks to help members improve thier skills via practice and training. We also get together every now and then and just talk bikes! Where do we ride? We do a lot of riding west of the city in the Virginia Shenendoah valley. There are some lovely twisties for the sportbikers and gorgeous scenery for the cruisers. We also plan on doing some longer trips down south and over to the eastern shore. To Join the Motorcycle Club We welcome all skill levels to the club, from beginners to advanced. If you have had less than 3 years of experience, we require that you have taken a formal training course such as the "Beginner Rider Course" offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (www.msf-usa.org). You must have been riding your current bike for at least a total of 300 miles before being able to ride it with us. You must have ridden it least twice in the past year. You must know what the term "counter steering" refers to and be able to make a decent attempt at explaining how a motorcycle turns. You may attend a ride at the sole discretion of the ride leader. We require you to come to at least one introductory ride so we can can get an idea of your relative skill level. This is nothing formal, we'll just go for a quick ride somewhere close to the city. We will also have a pre-ride meeting for most rides that is mandatory. This will most often be a night or two before the day of the ride. We'll get together so that everyone is familiar with the basic route, etc. The final go/no-go decision will be made by the ride leader the morning of the ride (ie if the weather turns bad or something). We will try and figure out the majority of a route in advance, but sometimes we may just hit the road and follow our nose. All riders must wear minimum protective gear consisting of helmet, gloves, and motorcycle jacket. You must also wear long pants that are at least as tough as jeans. All this holds true regardless of weather conditions. Sorry, no T-shirts and shorts even if the weather is just begging for it. Your ride must be at least 250cc, and on certain trips that may go up to a 500cc minimum. You must bring proof of registration and insurance and your bike must be in good condition as determined soley by the ride leader. On overnight trips, you must arrange for or provide your own sleeping situation (sleeping bags etc). We allow pillions (passengers) on some rides but not all. This will be indicated on the ride announcement. Please check with the designated ride leader. All pillions must wear the same protective gear as the pilot. IT MUST ALL FIT! No lending your old jacket to your pillion if it is 5 sizes too big for them. They must also have ridden with you at least twice before. Please be intelligent about deciding whether or not to bring along a passenger. (For example, there will be no second date after 3 hours on the back of a Ducati 748) This club is still in the process of being worked out. Please feel free to email any suggestions/concerns to motorcycles@netsap.org The Motorcycle Club members vary each month based on current and any new members. If you are new to the Motorcycle Club, please email motorcycles@netsap.org with your name, years riding, current bike, and any bike you've ridden for at least a total of 100 miles.
