SALTAF ’06 COMMITTEE: Planning Meeting – TODAY at 7:00pm!

SALTAF provides authors, filmmakers, literary and theatre professionals the opportunity to interact with their audience. Bibliophiles, cinema fans and young professionals can explore the creative process with professional artists and discover outlets for their own creative aspirations. Our committee is meeting to plan this year’s SALTAF, which will be held on November 4-5, 2006 at the Smithsonian. We invite anyone with any interest in helping out with this year’s SALTAF by applying for the co-chair position, being on the Committee or just sharing your ideas about this year’s event to attend the meeting on the 22nd of February.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/MENTORSHIP COMMITTEE: WETA Pledge Drive, March 12, 2006, 6:45pm

The Community Service/Mentorship Committee is looking for volunteers to help with the WETA Pledge Drive on March 12th from 6:45pm – 11pm. Volunteers' responsibilities include answering phone calls and taking pledges from viewers during the live programming. You may even be seen on TV if you're lucky! There will be breaks during the shift to socialize and refreshments will be provided. Please contact community@netsap.org if you are interested.

Join the members of the Families Committee and listen to what the Washington Post calls “original songs [that] have a definite rock edge and lean heavily toward family, love and children…Mr. Knick Knack takes the stage with his guitar and the kids go wild.” Mr. Knick Knack performs every Friday through December 31, 2006.

1. Smithsonian Institution: "A Conversation with Deepa Mehta and the Screening of her long-awaited film `Water'”, March 4, 2006

The critically acclaimed director, Deepa Mehta, will talk about her tumultuous journey as a film-maker with a special focus on the trilogy - `Fire' (1996), `Earth' (1998), and now `Water' (2005).  There will be a discussion with the audience following the screening. Deepa Mehta's most recent film `Water' is set in pre-independent India.  It examines child marriage, the plight of widows and celebrates the strength and endurance of women.  The film has taken 5 years to complete.  The theme proved controversial and provoked disparate impassioned responses.  `Water' stars John Abraham, Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas, and boasts a brilliant music score by A.R. Rahman.

2. Seeds of Peace: Second Annual Washington DC Young Leadership Committee Winter Gala, Featuring Andrew Card, White House Chief of Staff, March 4, 2006

Seeds of Peace is a scrupulously non-partisan, non-religious organization that works with youth leadership from conflict zones (Middle East, Balkans and South Asia). This year’s gala will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006 and will feature presentations by graduates of the Seeds of Peace program, awards and international food and music.

In addition to the main event there will be a more exclusive VIP Reception that will provide an opportunity to meet with numerous Ambassadors and US lawmakers who have a particular interest in international issues.

3. APA Film: Oscar Watching Party, March 5, 2006, 8:00pm


Join the Asian Pacific American Film for a FREE Oscar-watching party on March 5 to cheer on Ang Lee for the eight Academy Award nominations of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN! If selected, Lee will be the first person of Asian descent in Oscar history to receive the award for Best Director of a non-foreign language film. 4. Rhythmaya Dance Company: Co-ed Auditions, March 5, 2006

Rhythmaya Dance Company is looking for exceptionally talented, versatile, and passionate male and female dancers to join in presenting original, professional-quality dance performances at local and national venues such as the upcoming National Cherry Blossom Festival, 2005 Legg Mason Tennis Classic and beyond! Rooted in classical and modern forms of Indian dance, including Bharat Natyam, Kathak, and Bollywood, the company draws inspiration from international dance forms, including jazz, hip-hop, bhangra, flamenco, belly dancing, and more. Audition format will consist of learning a pre-choreographed troupe routine and performing a self-prepared piece, up to 1 minute in length and in any dance style, that highlights the dancer's unique expertise. 5. UPAKAR: Jazz Fusion Concert Featuring Sandip Burman March 11, 2006

Sandip Burman is a disciple of eminent tabla player Maestro Pandit Shyamal Bose and has made a name for himself both as an accompanying percussionist and composer. He has accompanied great artists such as Pt. Ravi Shankar, Pt. Jasraj and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and explored wider frontiers with jazz legends Jack DeJohnette, Al Dimeola, Glen Valez and Victor Wooten. He also collaborated on the Grammy winning album "Outbound" with Béla Fleck. Sandip has performed locally at the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap. For the past 4 years, he has traveled with an eclectic group of performers such as Paul Bollenbach on the Guitar and David Pietro on the Saxophone.

6. Natyam Dance Group: Auditions, March 11th, 13th, 15th and 18th, 2006

Natyam is a local dance company based in the Greater Washington area that promotes awareness of South Asian culture and arts through dance. We are currently looking for inspired and talented performers to join us as we unfold our timeless dance creations.

DATE (S) & TIME: Dates to learn choreographed routine: Saturday, March 11th 3:00 - 5:00 PM; Monday, March 13th 6:00 - 8:00 PM; Wednesday, March 15th 6:00 - 8:00 PM. (Please attend all 3 days, as you will learn different parts of the dance each day) Date to audition: Saturday, March 18th 3:00 - 6:00 PM

Please visit www.timelessnatyam.com for more information. The choreographed routine will be taught continuously for three days so your attendance is vital in learning the dance. The routine will be a fusion of dance styles that may include semi-classical, modern, bhangra, garba, and film. This routine will be approximately 3 - 5 minutes long. In addition to this routine, you will be required to perform a 60-90 second original routine that displays your creativity or specialization in dance. You are open to all types of dance styles and not just the ones we have listed above. We are not only looking for exceptional dancers, but those who project an excitement and embrace the love of dance.


7. South Asia Foundation for Art and Literature: Call For Submissions - Deadline, March 15, 2006

South Asia Foundation for Art and Literature (SAFAL) is pleased to announce the new journal Karmabhoomi. In this issue of Karmabhoomi we will feature poems by South Asian writers living in the United States, Australia, UK, Russia, Middle East, Europe and elsewhere. This work will be published at the end of 2006. The deadline for submission is March 15, 2006. 8. Georgetown Law, Vagina Monologues - Looking for FUN, FEARLESS FEMALES!

FUN, FEARLESS FEMALES we want YOU! Spots still available for Georgetown Law's upcoming benefit production of the Vagina Monologues scheduled to run on Mar 23rd and 24th. We are still looking for more people for the chorus (non-singing!) in addition to the introductions to each of the monologues. No stage experience or GU Law student affiliation necessary! Please spread the word to all the women you know!

V-Day 2006 spotlights Japanese 'comfort women' and we join women' groups worldwide in calling for justice and reparations for these war crimes and the human atrocities that continue today in places of armed conflict such as Sudan, Congo, and Iraq.
