Here are the highlights of NetSAP DC’s activities for this week.

In The News...

The NetSAP DC Ninth Annual Charity Gala will be held on Saturday July 22, 2006 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Tickets, for what promises to be the hottest event of the year, will go on sale on Monday, June 19.  This year's Charity Gala will feature:

- A cocktail reception with open bar and guided tours of the art gallery
- An elegant, three course gourmet meal prepared by one of the finest chefs in Washington, DC
- A prominent keynote speaker

- An awards presentation recognizing the rising stars of the South Asian professional community
- Live music and entertainment by renowned local South Asian musicians

NETSAP EVENTS Details

 

NETWORKING COMMITTEE: Third Thursday Networking Event, Network & Support a Good Cause!  Thursday June 15, 2006, 6:30 pm

 

Join us this Third Thursday for a very special networking event - 100% of the proceeds from this month's event will go to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and two other charities to be nominated as beneficiaries of this year's Charity Gala.  The fund presently devotes substantial resources towards the relief efforts in the areas of South Asia affected by the earthquake of 2005 and was also instrumental in leading the international response to the Tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia in 2004. PROFESSIONAL COMMITTEE: Fighting The Spread Of HIV/AIDS In India, Wednesday, June 21, 2006, 7:00 pm

Description: While India's economy is thriving, so is the spread of HIV/AIDS.  India has now become the largest number of AIDS infections at 5.7 million.  The epidemic could kill 31 million people by 2025.  On June 21st, Neilesh Shelat, MPH, will present his fascinating experience as an HIV/AIDS outreach worker in Chennai.  Please join us for this eye-opening event on the AIDS epidemic and different approaches to curb its spread in India

We are looking for people to help in all aspects of planning including:

 

- Sponsorship: Approaching targeted sponsors, preparing/researching material for sponsors, finding additional potential sponsors

- Entertainment: For this upscale event, we will need to think about classy entertainment options that are within our budget

- Logistics: Communicating with potential charities, supporting finances, creating a marketing plan, and helping to fill in the gaps to ensure another successful event.

SALTAF’06 COMMITTEE: Planning Meeting, Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 7:00pm

 

The SALTAF Committee is responsible for planning and coordinating all details involved with the phenomenally successful South Asian Literary and Theater Arts Festival. This is an annual event hosted at the Smithsonian and it features prominent South Asian writers, filmmakers and artists and draws hundreds of South Asians from across the East Coast to DC each fall. SALTAF provides authors, filmmakers, literary and theatre professionals the opportunity to interact with their audience. Bibliophiles, cinema fans and young professionals can explore the creative process with professional artists and discover outlets for their own creative aspirations. SALTAF celebrates the achievements of South Asians in the literature and arts and it has become one of NetSAP DC's most recognized and renowned flagship events.

(1) South Asian Bar Association (SABA-DC): Immigration Reform: Positions and Perspectives, Wednesday, June 14, 2006, 6:30 pm

 

SABA-DC and Covington & Burling invite you to attend a panel discussion on Immigration Reform. The bipartisan panel brings together individuals with substantial experience in immigration law and policy from a variety of backgrounds, including Capitol Hill, NGOs, and private practice. The panelists will discuss immigration reform generally, focusing on the bills passed recently by the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. They will also assess the implications of the current immigration debate on the South Asian American community.

(3) CMHS: A Thousand Feet A Joyful Beat, Wednesday, June 21, 2006, 6:30 pm

 

The Center for Multicultural Human Services, (CMHS) cordially requests the pleasure of your company at a very special event at the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, Virginia. We invite you to a fun filled evening of international dance performances, dance instruction, and socializing with young professionals from the DC Metro Area. Performances will include hip-hop, flamenco, belly dancing, Indian dance, and much more. The emcee for the event will be Miss Ethiopia, Jiitu Abraham.

 

CMHS is a non-profit organization located in Northern Virginia that helps people from ethnically diverse backgrounds succeed by providing comprehensive, culturally sensitive mental health and related services and by conducting research and training to make such services more widely available.

 

This evening features “A Thousand Feet, a Joyful Beat”. This is a worthwhile event that will raise funds in support of CMHS’s programs for children and their families who have been affected by war and other trauma and are struggling to rebuild their lives in the DC metropolitan area.
