(3) WORLD AFFAIRS COUNCIL, Washington, DC: The US - India Nuclear Deal, A Briefing By George Perkovich: Vice President, Carnegie Endowment For International Peace, July 13, 2006 , 6:30 pm
When President Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a civil nuclear agreement, it was heralded by many as marking a new era in US-India relations. President Bush had been hoping for Congress to quickly approve the deal, warning that failure to approve the nuclear deal will damage US-India relations and could possibly hurt US interests across the region, but controversy over the benefits has raised doubts about whether there will be speedy passage of the legislation. Please join us to discuss the fate of this agreement and its implications for America's relations with a major Asian ally, India, and the future of efforts to stop nuclear proliferation.
George Perkovich: Vice President for Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. His personal research has focused on nuclear strategy and nonproliferation, with a focus on South Asia . He is the author of India's Nuclear Bomb, which Foreign Affairs called "an extraordinary and perhaps definitive account of 50 years of Indian nuclear policymaking." Recently, he authored A Realist Case for Conditioning the U.S.-India Nuclear Deal, a working paper prepared for a Nonproliferation Education Center seminar.
