(3) KAUR FOUNDATION: Film Screening of “The Widow Colony” by Harpreet Kaur, Saturday, September 9, 2006 , 1:00 PM

Kaur Foundation is proud to host the East Coast Premiere of the powerful and moving Award Winning Documentary - The Widow Colony. A film by Harpreet Kaur.  The documentary takes the viewers to the streets of the localities housed by the 1984 widows, to convey their trauma, their battle for justice and their struggle for survival.

The year is 1984.  After more than a decade in public office, India's Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, has been assassinated by her Sikh body guards.  In New Delhi thousands of citizens take to the streets.  They are motivated by grief and outrage.  Soon the mobs begin to converge on Sikh neighborhoods.  Houses are burned.  Women are raped.  Entire families are murdered.  When the smoke finally clears, more than 4,000 Sikhs are dead.

"The Widow Colony -- India's Unsettled Settlement"  is a powerful new documentary that sheds light on these tragic events, which remains largely unknown outside of India.  The film presents a series of interviews with the widows and children who survived the massacre, interspersed with moving images and testimony from journalists who covered the event for Indian and western media.  Many of these women seem to be stuck in 1984 -- unable to forget the unspeakable events that forever changed their lives.  It also draws attention to the fact that these crimes were never investigated and the persons responsible were never held responsible for their actions.

The film was written and directed by Harpreet Kaur, with editorial assistance from the Steven Spielberg Shoah Foundation.  The film was produced by Sach Productions, an independent organization that uses film and other mass media to increase public awareness of Sikh religion, culture, and historical experience.

A must see film of the year, a first place winner in the Toronto Film Festival - The Female Eye - where Deepa Mehta's highly acclaimed 'Water' was also hosted.  The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Director.
