(6) APIA Marrow Donor Registry Drive : Tuesday, September 26, 2006, 4:00 PM

For Wincheng Lin.

Wincheng is one of thousands of Asians diagnosed each year with life-threatening blood diseases, such as leukemia an daplastic anemia.  Unfortunately, many will need a marrow/stem cell transplant to survive.  They first need to find a matching donor.

Of the 6 million registered volunteer potential marrow donors in the National Marrow Donor Program, only 8% consists of Asians.  This makes finding a match more difficult.  Since marrow is inherited in the same way as eye and skin color, the best chance of finding a match would be someone of one’s own ethnicity.

TIME: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

LOCATION: SEARAC, 1628 16th Street, NW , Washington, DC 20009.  Ph: 202-667-4690.

(7) Asia Society: Partitions, An Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings from Pakistan and India, Thursday, September 28, 2006, 6:00 PM

"Partitions: Contemporary Paintings from Pakistan and India" s howcases works from an eclectic group of contemporary artists.   The exhibition is not intended to evoke the historical events surrounding the creation of India and Pakistan, but rather, to explore divisions at a deeper level.   Each of the six artists has interpreted this theme in a unique way.

Artists include: Ahsan Jamal (1978), based in Lahore, Pakistan, examines the cultural and political divisions between India and PakistanChhotu Lal (1957), who is based in Udaipur, India, uses the Indian miniature style to present a modern interpretation of the Bhagavat Gita.  Hasnat Mehmood (1978), based in Jhelum, Pakistan, uses the traditional miniature technique to express his views on personal and political concerns.  Rameshwar Singh (1948), based in Jaipur, India, produces brightly colored works that explore partitions in time.  Viren Tanwar (1952), based in Chandigarh, India, has created a series of small works for this exhibition.   (This is a bit of a departure for the artist, who is known for creating large canvases.)  Saira Wasim (1975), born and brought up in Lahore, Pakistan, uses contemporary miniature form to explore social and political issues that divide the modern world.

The exhibition will be held from September 28th-October 26th, 2006 at the HNTB Gallery Space in Washington, DC.   The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 6:00 PM at the HNTB Gallery Space.  The Washington Center was established in 1970 and was one of the Asia Society's first regional affiliates. The Asia Society Washington Center provides a forum in the nation's capital for diplomats, members of Congress, government officials, journalists, scholars, artists, business executives, and other experts to exchange views on a wide variety of subjects concerning Asia. The Washington Center conducts more than seventy public programs per year on contemporary affairs, trade and investment, arts and culture.  Its activities and initiatives advance the Asia Society's commitment to increase American understanding of Asia and the Pacific.
