DINNER CIRCLE: Dinner Circle Networking Event, Wednesday, September 27, 2006, 8:00 pm

This month's Dinner Circle event will take place on Wednesday, September 27 at 8:00 pm at different restaurants in the Dupont Circle , Washington DC, Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD.

Our commitment: We'll do our best to maximize the potential of the evening by thoughtfully matching participants with others of similar age, interests, and career stage. We'll also try to pick easily accessible, moderately priced restaurants that make the evening more enjoyable.

Your commitment: First, we ask that you show up to your assigned restaurant promptly at 8:00 pm (that's Eastern Standard Time, not Indian Standard Time!). Second, because these groups are intended to be small, one or two people canceling at the last minute can really disrupt the dynamic. Thus, we ask that you only sign up for the event if you're 99% sure that you'll be able to attend. If you cannot make it this month, there will be another NETSAP Dinner Circle event next month.

If you have any questions or comments e-mail: Neeraj Bhat at dinner@netsap.org.

**SAVE THE DATE** South Asian Literary Theater Arts Festival (SALTAF™) 2006, Saturday, November 4, 2006, 10:00 AM

SALTAF™ 2006 returns anew this fall, marking the third year that the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program is partnering with the Washington DC chapter of the Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP-DC).

A sneak peek at this fall includes multi-award-winning Samrat Upadhyay (Arresting God in Kathmandu, Guru of Love, and the most recent The Royal Ghosts), who is hailed as the first Nepali author writing in English.

We'll also be celebrating strong mother/daughter legacies... Kiran Desai, whose latest book, The Inheritance of Loss, was just nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize, will be here! Her mother, the illustrious Anita Desai, was quite a crowd-pleaser last year!

We'll also welcome Devyani Saltzman, whose lively first title, Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking, is all about making the amazing film, Water, with her filmmaker mother, Deepa Mehta. Water had its U.S. premiere at last year's SALTAF here at the Smithsonian, with Deepa Metha flying in just to talk to the crowds! And crowded it was! Hundreds were turned away -- so advice to come early this year!

We've also got brand new film screenings and related panel discussions in the works. So stay tuned to this space for more wonderful surprises!

We are still offering sponsorship opportunities.  For donations or further information, send an email to saltaf@netsap.org.

NetSAP DC ELECTIONS: Election Committee Volunteers Needed

In anticipation of the upcoming Board elections, the Executive Board is looking for three volunteers to serve as the Election Committee.  The Election Committee is a group of individuals responsible for managing the election process by collecting nominations and tallying votes.  We are looking for three unbiased NetSAP members-in-good-standing to serve as the oversight committee for the upcoming elections. Please note, Elections Committee members may not themselves run for Executive Board positions, nor may they directly advocate the election of any one nominee over another!  However, they may later on apply for Committee Chair positions.  If you are interested, please send an email to president@netsap.org.

NetSAP MEMBER RAFFLE: Join NetSAP this Summer and Earn the Chance to Win Great Prizes!

SALTAF™ 2006 Planning Committee:  Call out for volunteers to help with flyer, newspaper ads and program design!

Subroto Roy Chowdhury is a fine product of the post-Indian independence renaissance in Hindustani music, which opened up the performing arts, hitherto dominated by hereditary musicianship, to talented youths. Subroto studied music under legendary musicians - Suresh and Nirmal Chakravarty, Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, Radhika Mohan Moitra, Nasir Aminuddin Dagar, and Bimal Mukherjee - along with his academic pursuits, and excelled in both. He holds M.A.’s in both Economics and Music. After teaching economics for 19 years at prestigious colleges in Calcutta, he gave it all up in 1986 for a life dedicated entirely to music.

Subroto was introduced in Calcutta in 1964 and has since established himself in India and Europe as a serious performing musician, musicologist, and teacher. His career as a performing artist has taken him all over India and Europe, including concert appearances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, Berlin Festag and the Tubingen and Leverkussen Jazz Festivals in Germany, and the Ljubliana Festival in Yugoslavia. He has been an “A”Grade Artist on All India Radio, Calcutta, since 1978, with several National Broadcasts to his credit, as well as concert broadcasts over several European radio stations. He has made numerous recordings for Indian and European labels.

(5) APIA Marrow Donor Registry Drive: Tuesday, September 26, 2006, 4:00 PM

For Wincheng Lin.

Wincheng is one of thousands of Asians diagnosed each year with life-threatening blood diseases, such as leukemia an daplastic anemia.  Unfortunately, many will need a marrow/stem cell transplant to survive.  They first need to find a matching donor.

Of the 6 million registered volunteer potential marrow donors in the National Marrow Donor Program, only 8% consists of Asians.  This makes finding a match more difficult.  Since marrow is inherited in the same way as eye and skin color, the best chance of finding a match would be someone of one’s own ethnicity.

DATE: Tuesday, September 26, 2006

TIME: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

LOCATION: SEARAC, 1628 16th Street, NW , Washington, DC 20009.  Ph: 202-667-4690.

(6) Asia Society: Partitions, An Exhibition of Contemporary Paintings from Pakistan and India, Thursday, September 28, 2006, 6:00 PM

"Partitions: Contemporary Paintings from Pakistan and India" showcases works from an eclectic group of contemporary artists.   The exhibition is not intended to evoke the historical events surrounding the creation of India and Pakistan, but rather, to explore divisions at a deeper level.   Each of the six artists has interpreted this theme in a unique way.

Artists include: Ahsan Jamal (1978), based in Lahore, Pakistan, examines the cultural and political divisions between India and PakistanChhotu Lal (1957), who is based in Udaipur, India, uses the Indian miniature style to present a modern interpretation of the Bhagavat Gita.  Hasnat Mehmood (1978), based in Jhelum, Pakistan, uses the traditional miniature technique to express his views on personal and political concerns.  Rameshwar Singh (1948), based in Jaipur, India, produces brightly colored works that explore partitions in time.  Viren Tanwar (1952), based in Chandigarh, India, has created a series of small works for this exhibition.   (This is a bit of a departure for the artist, who is known for creating large canvases.)  Saira Wasim (1975), born and brought up in Lahore, Pakistan, uses contemporary miniature form to explore social and political issues that divide the modern world.

The exhibition will be held from September 28th-October 26th, 2006 at the HNTB Gallery Space in Washington, DC.   The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at 6:00 PM at the HNTB Gallery Space.  The Washington Center was established in 1970 and was one of the Asia Society's first regional affiliates. The Asia Society Washington Center provides a forum in the nation's capital for diplomats, members of Congress, government officials, journalists, scholars, artists, business executives, and other experts to exchange views on a wide variety of subjects concerning Asia. The Washington Center conducts more than seventy public programs per year on contemporary affairs, trade and investment, arts and culture.  Its activities and initiatives advance the Asia Society's commitment to increase American understanding of Asia and the Pacific.
