DINNER CIRCLE: Dinner Circle Networking Event, Wednesday, September 27, 2006, 8:00 pm
This month's Dinner Circle event will take place on Wednesday, September 27 at 8:00 pm at different restaurants in the Dupont Circle, Washington DC, Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD.
Our commitment: We'll do our best to maximize the potential of the evening by thoughtfully matching participants with others of similar age, interests, and career stage. We'll also try to pick easily accessible, moderately priced restaurants that make the evening more enjoyable.
Your commitment: First, we ask that you show up to your assigned restaurant promptly at 8:00 pm (that's Eastern Standard Time, not Indian Standard Time!). Second, because these groups are intended to be small, one or two people canceling at the last minute can really disrupt the dynamic. Thus, we ask that you only sign up for the event if you're 99% sure that you'll be able to attend. If you cannot make it this month, there will be another NETSAP Dinner Circle event next month.
If you have any questions or comments, visit the Dinner Circle webpage or e-mail: Neeraj Bhat at dinner@netsap.org.

That service is the noblest which is rendered for its own sake.”

LOCATION: 2114 14th Street, NW , Washington, DC 20009

**SAVE THE DATE** South Asian Literary Theater Arts Festival (SALTAF™) 2006, Saturday, November 4, 2006, 10:00 AM
SALTAF™ 2006 returns anew this fall, marking the third year that the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program is partnering with the Washington DC chapter of the Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP-DC).
A sneak peek at this fall includes multi-award-winning Samrat Upadhyay (Arresting God in Kathmandu, Guru of Love, and the most recent The Royal Ghosts), who is hailed as the first Nepali author writing in English.
We'll also be celebrating strong mother/daughter legacies... Kiran Desai, whose latest book, The Inheritance of Loss, was just nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize, will be here! Her mother, the illustrious Anita Desai, was quite a crowd-pleaser last year!
We'll also welcome Devyani Saltzman, whose lively first title, Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking, is all about making the amazing film, Water, with her filmmaker mother, Deepa Mehta. Water had its U.S. premiere at last year's SALTAF here at the Smithsonian, with Deepa Metha flying in just to talk to the crowds! And crowded it was! Hundreds were turned away -- so advice to come early this year!
We've also got brand new film screenings and related panel discussions in the works. So stay tuned to this space for more wonderful surprises!
We are still offering sponsorship opportunities. For donations or further information, send an email to saltaf@netsap.org.

NetSAP DC ELECTIONS: Election Committee Volunteers Needed
In anticipation of the upcoming Board elections, the Executive Board is looking for three volunteers to serve as the Election Committee. The Election Committee is a group of individuals responsible for managing the election process by collecting nominations and tallying votes. We are looking for three unbiased NetSAP members-in-good-standing to serve as the oversight committee for the upcoming elections. Please note, Elections Committee members may not themselves run for Executive Board positions, nor may they directly advocate the election of any one nominee over another! However, they may later on apply for Committee Chair positions. If you are interested, please send an email to president@netsap.org. |

Please note that the events below are listed as a service to our members. The views expressed in the following activities and by the groups listed below are not shared or endorsed by NetSAP DC.For Additional Details About These Events, Please Visit our Online Calendar at www.netsap.org.
(1) APIA Marrow Donor Registry Drive: Tuesday, September 26, 2006, 4:00 PM
For Wincheng Lin.
Wincheng is one of thousands of Asians diagnosed each year with life-threatening blood diseases, such as leukemia an daplastic anemia. Unfortunately, many will need a marrow/stem cell transplant to survive. They first need to find a matching donor.
Of the 6 million registered volunteer potential marrow donors in the National Marrow Donor Program, only 8% consists of Asians. This makes finding a match more difficult. Since marrow is inherited in the same way as eye and skin color, the best chance of finding a match would be someone of one’s own ethnicity.

(5) Smithsonian Institute: Freer Gallery Centennial Celebration: October 7, 2006 PM
In 1906, at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution accepted a generous gift of Asian and American art from collector and connoisseur Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919). This gift was later housed in what became the first art museum of the Smithsonian Institution: the Freer Gallery of Art. The Director and staff of the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery invite our extended SI family to join us on Saturday, October 7, 2006, from sunrise to moonrise, as
we celebrate the Freer Centennial with an entire day of activities.
The event begins at 8:00 a.m. with "Yoga on the Mall" an hour-long yoga class led by several of Washington's leading yoga studio owners and instructors. Note: This event will be cancelled in the event of rain. Bring a mat and your friends and family and be part of our effort to make yoga - and Smithsonian - history when we attempt to have the largest yoga class ever on the Mall. The more the merrier, so please spread the word. There will also be demonstrations of tai chi and other martial arts following the
yoga.
After relaxing and renewing, head across the street to the Museum for music by the Fes Festival of Sacred World Music. Kids of all ages can take part in games and craft making workshops and gallery tours. After noon, have some 100th birthday cake and sample Asian food available for purchase from the popular restaurant Teaism. Later, enjoy a sake tasting accompanied by Japanese kodo music while lotus lights float in the Freer courtyard fountain. The day culminates with jazz from the Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet
on the steps and a comedy showcase by local favorites Vijai Nathan and Frank Hong (for mature audiences only please) in the Meyer Auditorium.
Note: In case of rain the Fes Festival and Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet will be moved to the Meyer auditorium and tickets will be distributed one hour before show times.
All events are free unless otherwise noted. A complete and up-to-date schedule of events will be available on the Freer+ Sackler Web site at http://www.asia.si.edu . We hope to see you on October 7.
For further information on this message contact James Gordon, Freer/Sackler Gallery at (202) 633-0520 (Non-VoIP Users) | x-30520 (VoIP Users) or GordonJ@si.edu. |
