Dinner Circle: Wednesday, October 25, 2006, 8:00 PM

If you are new to the Dinner Circle, welcome! And, for those of you who are veterans by now, thanks for helping to make this program a smashing success. We have had close to 100 attendees for each of the last six Dinner Circle events. Before you sign up for this month's dinner, please keep two important points in mind:

(1)
Please sign up at the link below ONLY if you are 100% sure that you will be able to attend. Last minute cancellations make the matching less value-add and they are a disappointment to others who commit to attending their assigned groups. We have kept this program free to the entire DC South Asian community (members and non) but will start assessing an attendance fee if we can't reduce last minute drop offs.

(2) if you have suggestions for improvement, or would even like to get involved in planning this event going forward, please e-mail dinner@netsap.org and vp@netsap.org. We hope to see you later this month!

Thanks,

Neeraj Bhat & Amita Shukla

The Dinner Circle Team

Have you been searching for the opportunity to meet and get to know other South Asian professionals in the
Washington DC area? Are you the type that prefers small dinners with friends over raucous nights out at the clubs? Well, then come participate in our monthly NetSAP Dinner Circle event! These small group dinners are designed to provide comfortable, intimate settings where young professionals with similar interests can have meaningful conversations and expand their social and professional relationships. The dinners are primarily targeted at those with at least a few years of work experience, but all are welcome to attend.

Here's how it works: This month's Dinner Circle event will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 8:00 pm at different restaurants in the Dupont Circle , Washington DC, Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD. Please click on the link below if you'd like to attend and answer a few questions that will help us learn more about you. Once we have the list of all interested participants, we'll divide you up into groups of 6-8 and email each group the specific restaurant at which they should meet. Restaurant assignments will be sent out next Monday (2 days prior). Then, just show up ready to be social and enjoy a meal! There is no fee for the event, though you will have to pay for your share of the dinner.

Our commitment : We'll do our best to maximize the potential of the evening by thoughtfully matching participants with others of similar age, interests, and career stage. We'll also try to pick easily accessible, moderately priced restaurants that make the evening more enjoyable.

Your commitment: First, we ask that you show up to your assigned restaurant promptly at 8:00 pm (that's Eastern Standard Time, not Indian Standard Time!). Second, because these groups are intended to be small, one or two people cancelling at the last minute can really disrupt the dynamic. Thus, we ask that you only sign up for the event if you're 100% sure that you'll be able to attend. If you cannot make it this month, there will be another NETSAP Dinner Circle event next month.

Here's the link:

South Asian Literary Theater Arts Festival (SALTAF™) 2006, Saturday, November 4, 2006, 10:00 AM

SALTAF™ 2006 returns anew this fall, marking the third year that the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program is partnering with the Washington DC chapter of the Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP-DC).

A sneak peek at this fall includes multi-award-winning Samrat Upadhyay (Arresting God in Kathmandu, Guru of Love, and the most recent The Royal Ghosts), who is hailed as the first Nepali author writing in English.

Tarun Tejpal arrives from India just in time for his upcoming U.S. publication of his first novel, The Alchemy of Desire. Already a critically acclaimed debut in the United Kingdom and the latest darling of the London literati, Desire hits stands in December.

We'll also be celebrating strong mother/daughter legacies... Kiran Desai, whose latest book, The  Inheritance of Loss, was just nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize, will be here! Her mother, the illustrious Anita Desai, was quite a crowd-pleaser last year!

We'll also welcome Devyani Saltzman, whose lively first title, Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking, is all about making the amazing film, Water, with her filmmaker mother, Deepa Mehta. Water had its U.S. premiere at last year's SALTAF here at the Smithsonian, with Deepa Mehta flying in just to talk to the crowds! And crowded it was! Hundreds were turned away -- so advice to come early this year!

Director, Tanuj Chopra will be joining us to present his feature debut, Punching at the Sun, winner of Best Narrative Feature at the 2006 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival and official selection of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

Joya Biswas

Acclaimed as the First Lady of Sitar, Joya Biswas is one of the outstanding lady musicians of India, whose position has remained unchallenged for the last three decades in the field of instrumental music. Born into a Kolkatta-based family, Joya was encouraged by her engineer father and painter mother to learn music. She won numerous prizes during her school and college days for her sitar playing. Joya left a budding academic career to study sitar intensively under Pandit Ravi Shankar with a Government cultural scholarship. After rigorous training under her guru, she emerged as a sitarist of outstanding merit during the 1960s, performing all over India and abroad. A pioneer in her field, which is dominated by male sitarists, Joya soon carved a niche for herself in the music world as a sitarist of rare talent, possessing both virtuosity and innate musicality.

She has had numerous concert tours in India and abroad since 1959. Highlights include a tour of Russia, Poland, and East Germany in 1968 (sponsored by the Government of India), a tour of West Germany, France, and the U.K. in 1980, and the Festival of India Program in Russia during 1988. Joya was invited by French television to telecast a sitar recital on 21st June, 1988, which was International Music Day. BBC invited her to perform in the coveted "THIRD PROGRAMME"in 1965, followed by another BBC broadcast in 1980. Finally BBC’s Channel 4 interviewed her as India’s First Lady of Sitar in 1996. She gave a memorable performance in 1996 in London’s Nehru Centre to a packed house. A recent tour of Sri Lanka, sponsored by the Government of India, to inaugurate a Cultural Centre in the golden Jubilee Year of Indian freedom, has brought fresh laurels for her from the Sri Lankan press and public. Mother Teresa honored her with Mahila Navaratna Award in 1993 in Calcutta. Joya, a graduate in History and Economics, with a diploma in Journalism, is currently attached to different radio and television programs, universities, and cultural committees throughout India as both a performer and advisor. She has given lecture recitals and conducted workshop in various Universities of India and abroad. She has many recordings to her credit.

Samir Chatterjee

Samir Chatterjee is one of the leading Tabla players of India. He began his studies early with Pandit Bankim Ghosh, Pandit Balaram Mukherjee, Pandit Rathin Dhar and Mohammad Salim. His later formation as a musician occurred under the guidance of Pandit Amalesh Chatterjee (since 1966) and Pandit Shyamal Bose (since 1984). All of Samir's teachers have been from the Farrukhabad Gharana (school) of Tabla-playing, which he now represents.

Samir Chatterjee appears frequently as a soloist and an accompanist throughout India and abroad. Since 1982 he has been regularly touring the different countries of the world. He can be heard on numerous recordings as a soloist and accompanying many of India's greatest musicians, as well as in collaboration with noted western musicians. Samir Chatterjee has accompanied many of India's greatest musicians including Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, and others.
