Dinner Circle:Join us for this fun, monthly event. Wednesday, October 25, 8:00 PM

Here's how it works: This month's Dinner Circle event will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 8:00 pm at different restaurants in the Dupont Circle , Washington DC, Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD. Please click on the link below if you'd like to attend and answer a few questions that will help us learn more about you. Once we have the list of all interested participants, we'll divide you up into groups of 6-8 and email each group the specific restaurant at which they should meet. Restaurant assignments will be sent out next Monday (2 days prior). Then, just show up ready to be social and enjoy a meal! There is no fee for the event, though you will have to pay for your share of the dinner.

Our commitment: We'll do our best to maximize the potential of the evening by thoughtfully matching participants with others of similar age, interests, and career stage. We'll also try to pick easily accessible, moderately priced restaurants that make the evening more enjoyable.

Your commitment: First, we ask that you show up to your assigned restaurant promptly at 8:00 pm (that's Eastern Standard Time, not Indian Standard Time!). Second, because these groups are intended to be small, one or two people canceling at the last minute can really disrupt the dynamic. Thus, we ask that you only sign up for the event if you're 100% sure that you'll be able to attend. If you cannot make it this month, there will be another NetSAP Dinner Circle event next month.

If you have any questions or comments, e-mail: dinner@netsap.org.

Political Committee: Chai Chat, October 30, 2006, 6:30 PM

It's time again for another Chai Chat, just in time to discuss the upcoming election and its potential effect on the South Asian American community.  Much more has happened recently, too, with the British

Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, suggesting that Muslim women should abandon the practice of wearing full-veil niqabs.  The New York Times recently reported that the European political center is defending Muslim practices less and less as European and Muslim values continue to interact.  What does this mean for America?

We hope you can join us on October 30, 2006 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM for what promises to be an interesting political discussion. The October Chai Chat will take place at the Cosi at 20th and M St.  Please RSVP

South Asian Literary Theater Arts Festival (SALTAF™) 2006, Saturday, November 4, 2006, 10:00 AM

SALTAF™ 2006 returns anew this fall, marking the third year that the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program is partnering with the Washington DC chapter of the Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP-DC).

A sneak peek at this fall includes multi-award-winning Samrat Upadhyay (Arresting God in Kathmandu, Guru of Love, and the most recent The Royal Ghosts), who is hailed as the first Nepali author writing in English.

Tarun Tejpal arrives from India just in time for his upcoming U.S. publication of his first novel, The Alchemy of Desire. Already a critically acclaimed debut in the United Kingdom and the latest darling of the London literati, Desire hits stands in December.

We'll also be celebrating strong mother/daughter legacies... Kiran Desai, whose latest book, The  Inheritance of Loss, was just nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize, will be here! Her mother, the illustrious Anita Desai, was quite a crowd-pleaser last year!

We'll also welcome Devyani Saltzman, whose lively first title, Shooting Water: A Memoir of Second Chances, Family, and Filmmaking, is all about making the amazing film, Water, with her filmmaker mother, Deepa Mehta. Water had its U.S. premiere at last year's SALTAF here at the Smithsonian, with Deepa Mehta flying in just to talk to the crowds! And crowded it was! Hundreds were turned away -- so advice to come early this year!

Director, Tanuj Chopra will be joining us to present his feature debut, Punching at the Sun, winner of Best Narrative Feature at the 2006 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival and official selection of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

DATE: Saturday, November 4, 2006

TIME: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

ADMISSION: Free

Wharton India Economic Forum 2006 (WIEF), the premier student-run business forum focusing on India, will take place on November 11th, 2006 at the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia. Established in 1996, this year marks the eleventh year of the conference and also coincides with the 125th anniversary of The Wharton School. The theme of this year's conference is 'Realizing the Indian Dream.'

The past decade has seen India at the forefront of the global business and political landscape. Though the success has been attributed to a myriad of factors such as the country’s focus on information technology, favorable economic policies, and a growing number of ambitious entrepreneurs, the common thread underlying all of these initiatives is the Indian Dream. Although the Indian Dream parallels the idea of the American Dream, we seek to further delve into what exactly constitutes India's ideal for success. WIEF 2006 will serve as the platform for thought leaders to define their perception of this dream.

This year’s conference will host important business leader such as Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Bajaj Auto Ltd.; Adi Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Group; Captain G R Gopinath, Founder and MD, Air Deccan; Rajat Kumar Gupta, previous Worldwide Chairman, McKinsey; Sunil Kant Munjal, CEO and MD, Hero Cycles Ltd.; Rajendra Pawar, Chairman, NIIT; Gunit Chadha, CEO and MD, Deutsche Bank AG, India; Dr. Anil Khandelwal, Chairman and MD, Bank of Baroda; Adarsh Kishore, Secretary, Ministry of Finance; Dr. Ashok Lahiri, Chief Economic Advisor, Department of Economic Affairs; Ambassador Raminder Singh Jassal, Deputy Chief of Mission Embassy of India; Rajeev Ratan Shah, Member-Secretary, Planning Commission; and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman and MD, Biocon Ltd. These speakers and many others will take part in the following panels related to India’s economic prospects:

- Indian Industry: Redefining Boundaries

- Gateway to India: Opportunities and Challenges

- Media & Entertainment: It’s Showtime!

- Destination India: Entrepreneurs at Work

- Investment in India: Fueling the Growth

- Indian Financial Services: Fortune in the Middle of the Pyramid

This year’s conference promises to offer the most unique perspective ever on the promise of India’s future growth and development. For those interested in participating in the Indian Dream, please join us for this event. Please visit www.whartonindia.com or email wief-press@wharton.upenn.edu for more information.
